Billy Joe Boydstun, age 85, died on Thursday, March 3, 2022, in Amarillo, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Central Time on Wednesday March 9th at the Felt United Methodist Church in Felt, Oklahoma. Burial will follow in the Bertrand Cemetery.

Billy Joe Boydstun was born August 11, 1936, in Campo, Colorado, the youngest child of Ottis and Velma (Crone) Boydstun. He passed away peacefully on March 3, 2022, in Amarillo, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.
Bill's father died when he was almost 2 years old. In 1944, his mother married George Harris, and the family moved to Vilas, Colorado. George and Velma purchased a farm and land east of Felt, Oklahoma. Bill stayed with his grandmother to finish that school year in Vilas, then began 7th grade at Felt School where he graduated from Felt High in 1954.
Bill was united in marriage to Roberta McDaniel, May 19, 1957, in Clayton, New Mexico. During that winter, '56 and '57, Bill and his stepdad built their future home in Felt, adding finishing touches that included installing vents in the gabled ends. This was just in time for the infamous '57 Blizzard to blow the attic completely full of snow. Evidence of an unfortunate misstep in a weak spot, while shoveling the snow out of the attic, can still be found in the dining room ceiling… and the vents were nailed shut.
The four children that were born to this union were Bill's pride and joy; Denise was born in 1958; Blaine in 1960; Bryce in 1971; and Dhonda in 1974. He bragged about their accomplishments and was prone to blame others for their transgressions.
Bill farmed broomcorn with his step-dad, then continued farming maize and wheat after George and Velma retired and moved to eastern Oklahoma. During some of this time, he supplemented the family income with employment by County Dist. 1. A former resident has sent sympathy to the family and shared that he thought of Bill as gruff until he began working with him. He gave Bill credit for helping him with useful information on running a motor grader and knew he was a good friend.
Bill served many years on the Felt School Board while his children were students. He took his position very seriously and strived to support both faculty and students. His dedication provided lifelong friendships with fellow board members, faculty, students, and parents.
Upon retirement from the school board, he knew there was a need for bus drivers, so began a lengthy career of school bus driving. Seventy-five percent of shared grief and sympathy have been from former students who rode his bus. A few even rode his bus all of their school days.
Bill's strong desire for safety in the community led him to help establish the Felt Volunteer Fire Dept. His family realized how deeply he was involved with this mission when he could not go to one large fire that occurred while he was recovering from very serious surgery. He finally talked his daughter into driving him near the scene, just to feel he was part of the task. One fellow fireman stated he felt safest, riding on the platform in the brush truck with Bill driving.
He also served on the Felt Community Building Board and helped the group attain grants to raise funds for building the present community center, established in 1995.
Bill became an active member of Felt United Methodist Church and served on many committees and he served a few years with the local Gideon Chapter until declining health did not let him continue to attend services. He then compensated by watching the Quail Creek Church services on Sunday mornings, and 700 Club every weekday.
Bill was preceded in death by an infant sister, Betty Jo, his father, Ottis Boydstun; step-father, George Harris; his mother, Velma Harris; his brother, Bob Boydstun; brother-in-law, Dwaine Guymon. Also, Roberta's brother-in-law, Jere Hughes; her brother, Daryl McDaniel; and her sister-in-law, Karen McDaniel.
Bill is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Roberta; their children, Denise Boydstun, Guymon, OK; Blaine (Jennifer) Boydstun, Clarkesville, GA; Bryce Boydstun, Amarillo, TX; Dhonda (Robert) Vaughan, McAlester, OK. Survivors also include his sister, Dorothy Guymon, and her son, Nick Guymon, Hollister, MO; sister-in-law, Joan Boydstun, and her son Michael (Melody), Cańon City, CO, and her daughter, Micky Marsh, Lamar, CO; Roberta's sisters, Verlene Hughes, Boise City, OK, and Anita (Steve) Reed, Liberal, KS.
Also missing him are his five grandchildren, Logan (Natalie) Boydstun, Norfolk, VA; Cooper (Nicollette) Boydstun, Juliette, GA; Brynn Vaughan, Norman, OK; Maya Vaughan, Ada, OK; and Zaylie Boydstun, Ada, OK; and two great-grandsons, Logan's Victor and Cooper's Bridges. A host of nieces, nephews, and cousins are sharing in the sadness of his death.
