Helen Irene (Bookout) Tompkins, age 77, died on Thursday, May 8, 2025, in Midland, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the Amistad Church, in Amistad, New Mexico with Pastor Kenneth W. Tidmore, officiating. Helen Irene (Bookout) Tompkins was born on March 18, 1948, to Clarence Hershel and Rose Verene (Christian) Bookout. She lived most of her life in Tularosa, New Mexico. In the summer of 1970, she moved to Clayton, New Mexico where she raised chickens and did some trucking for Carol Durbin. Helen delivered a load of hay to Howard in the summer of 1973. Howard decided, she was a keeper and married her on June 13, 1974. Together, they built a trucking company, ranch and a beautiful family. During her life, she had many occupations. First and foremost, she was a wife and mother. Helen helped the family business by being a dutiful ranch hand when needed. She spent many hours trucking. Hauling cattle, dry ice, hay or cotton seed cake. She loved working for Hamp McCook as his magistrate court clerk. Helen was also a licensed EMT and IV Tech. Serving as Secretary and Show Secretary for the New Mexico Cutting Horse Association was one of her most favorite positions of honor that she held. She was an active member of the Amistad Church. Helen was preceded in death by her father and mother and one brother, Jackie Basil Bookout.

She leaves her husband of 51 years, Howard Glenn Tompkins, 3 daughters, Marla Amerson (Kelly Doshier), Gayla Crutchfield (Brandon) and Nira Powell (Bucky) and 1 son, Gene Payne (Lydia). She had four granddaughters, Shelby, Kim, Connie & Amy and three grandsons, Justin, Dakota & Tyler. Helen was blessed with 2 great-granddaughters, Chesney and Charmayne and one great-grandson, Axel.
