Memorial Services were held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 6th, at the First Baptist Church in Clayton, New Mexico with Rev. Billy Rammage, Pastor officiating. Services were under the direction of Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton, New Mexico.

John R. Newton was born on June 14, 1929, in Pittsburg, New Mexico to James Wilbur Newton and Texas (Anderson) Newton. J. R. served for two years in the US Army and later married Betty Jo (Hine) Newton on April 5, 1954 in Raton, New Mexico and she preceded him in death on August 5, 2006. They lived in the Springer area for a while and then moved to Fowler, Kansas where they lived for 18 years before returning to New Mexico in 1986 and then to Clayton in 1990. J. R. was a member and a Deacon at the Fowler Christian Church in Fowler, Kansas. He worked as a farmer, truck driver and a lumber jack for many years and he worked as a ditch rider for the water department at Springer Lake for 5 years. J. R. and Betty owned and operated the Mission Motel in Clayton for several years before they had to sell it due to health reasons. In addition to his wife and parents, J. R. was preceded in death by 1 son; Grady Newton in September of 2009, 3 sisters; Mildred Wadlington, Mary Lou Jack and Joy Newton and 2 brothers; Samuel Newton and James W. Newton, Jr.

SURVIVORS:

4 DAUGHTERS: Texas Davis and her husband Lynn, Roberta Newton all of Clayton, New Mexico, Cindy Newton of Dallas, Texas and Jessie Miller and her husband Mark of Frisco, Texas.

1 SON: John Newton and his wife Brenda of Dodge City, Kansas.

7 GRANDCHILDREN: Zach Wilson, Justin Newton and his wife Cassie, Nicholas Newton, Kylie Newton, Nicole Davis, Kelan Newton and Bennet Miller.

2 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Jayden Riley Newton and Callie Bates both of Clayton, New Mexico.

2 SISTERS: Doris Fischer of New Jersey and Norma Hutson and her husband Henry of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
