Obituary

Russell M. Ballew, age 51, died Thursday, November 4, 2010 in Guymon, Oklahoma.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 8 at the First United Methodist Church in Clayton, New Mexico with Rev. Terrell Jones, pastor of the Clayton Trinity Fellowship Church in Clayton, officiating. Burial followed in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton.

Russell M. Ballew was born on December 15, 1958 in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico to J. E. Ballew and Joyce Carol (Edwards) Ballew. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1975. Russ married Paula V. Maestas Ballew on July 20, 2001 at Clayton Lake State Park North of Clayton, New Mexico. Russell Ballew has written over 300 songs in various genres, including folk, rock, blues and contemporary Christian music. In the late 70's and 80's Russ played and sang professionally in dance bands in the Tri-state area. He produced and arranged his own recordings playing guitar, keyboards, bass and flute, as well as lead and harmony vocals. Many of his songs deal with addiction recovery issues. He has presented his music in many jails, Prisons, drug and alcohol rehabs and churches, and was active in Kairos prison ministry and 12-step recovery groups. Russ has also been a featured speaker at schools, churches and civic organizations. He earned his living as a professional piano tuner and technician and provided music programs free of charge.

WIFE: Paula V. Maestas Ballew of Clayton, New Mexico.

HIS PARENTS: J. E. and Joyce Carrol Ballew of Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

FATHER-IN-LAW & MOTHER-IN-LAW: Juan and Rosalie Maestas of Clayton, New Mexico.

3 DAUGHTERS: Christa Ballew of San Diego, California, Kaitlyn Ballew of Amarillo, Texas and Rene Sosa of Edgewood, New Mexico.

1 SON: David Ballew of New Orleans, Louisiana.

3 STEP-SONS: John Maestas, Geoffrey Maestas and Eric Maestas and his wife Jaid all of Clayton, New Mexico.

1 SISTER: Susan Georgia and her husband Scott of Estancia, New Mexico.

1 BROTHER: John Ballew and his wife Melba of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

5 GRANDCHILDREN: Kaylub Ballew, Danielle Ballew, Dezmon Sosa, Gabby Sosa and Oscar Sosa, III.

And Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
