Rosary was recited at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 2 by Deacon P. Louis Montoya and Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 3, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Clayton, New Mexico with Fr. Glenn Jones, Celebrant. Burial followed in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton, New Mexico.
Sofia (Valdez) Martinez was born in Moses, New Mexico, on January 10, 1925 to Guadalupe Valdez and Dolores (Martinez) Valdez. A lifelong resident of Union County, Sofia married Matias Martinez on May 19, 1945, in Clayton, New Mexico and he preceded her in death on August 27, 2004. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the VFW Post 3271 Auxiliary and was Mayordoma of Sacred Heart Church in Moses, New Mexico. Sofia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her husband and parents, Sofia was preceded in death by 7 brothers; Tony Valdez, Juan Valdez, Amado Valdez, Nasario Valdez, Frank Valdez, Felipe Valdez and Dessie Valdez.
SURVIVORS:
1 SON: Freddie Martinez and his wife Jan of Los Lunas, New Mexico.
1 DAUGHTER: Judy Steen and her husband Ronnie of Clayton, New Mexico.
7 GRANDCHILDREN: Michelle DeYapp and her husband Darrin, Roberta DeTamble and her husband Chuck, Daniel Martinez and his wife Christina, Antonio Martinez and his wife Sunny, Melissa Andrade and her husband Nick, Joshua Valdez and his wife Talisha and Cheyenne Garza.
19 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Ashley Marquez, Sydney DeYapp, Shelby DeYapp, Dylan DeYapp, Gomesindo DeYapp, Justin Andrade, Matthew Andrade, Lauren Andrade, Samuel DeTamble, Sean DeTamble, Amelia DeTamble, Austin Martinez, Nathan Martinez, Abriella Martinez, Emma Rose Martinez, Hayley Martinez, Christian Martinez, Riata Valdez and Raley Valdez.
MEMORIALS: The family suggests that memorials be made to the Sacred Heart Church of Moses, New Mexico, care of the Farmers and Stockmans Bank in Clayton.
