Obituary

Verda Elvira Lawrence, age 101, died Sunday, February 10, 2013 in Amarillo, Texas.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 15, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Clayton, New Mexico with Rev. Billy Rammage, retired pastor officiating. Burial followed in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Home, Clayton.

Verda Elvira (Leighton) Lawrence was born on October 21, 1911 in Freedom, Woodward County, Oklahoma to Ray William Leighton and Letha Pearl (McKenzie) Leighton. Her family came to Union County in 1914 when she was three years old. Verda married Fred Lawrence on July 20, 1927 in Clayton, New Mexico and he preceded her in death on November 18, 1972. They started their life together on a ranch near Clapham, New Mexico. They stayed on the farm until 1942 when they moved to Dumas, Texas where they stayed until 1953 when they moved to Amarillo, Texas. In 1969 they moved to Texline, Texas where Fred retired. After Fred's death Verda moved to Clayton and helped with her parents and in 1996 Verda moved to Amarillo, Texas. Verda liked to fish and enjoyed going to the lake with her children and grandchildren when she was in Clayton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clayton, the Lariat Cowbells and the Quilting Club at Bivins Memorial Nursing Home. While living at Bivins Verda was the President of the Residence Council and was the Grand Marshall for their parades as well as being awarded Valentines Queen. In addition to her parents and husband, Verda was preceded in death by a daughter; Lela Bell Lawrence, a son; Fred Ray Lawrence, a grandson; Coby Lee Lawrence and 3 sisters; Alta Wilson, Eunice Dunn and Vera Jones.

4 DAUGHTERS: Pearl Sowers and Wanda Kay Stanley and her husband Jim all of Amarillo, Texas, Donna May Hall of Blackwell, Oklahoma and Lula Ann Traves and her husband Bill of Clarendon, Texas.

1 SON: Daniel Lee Lawrence and his wife Gail of Lumberton, Texas.

1 DAUGHTER-IN-LAW: Joyce Lawrence of Logan, New Mexico.

1 SISTER: Wanda Lee Gard of Clayton, New Mexico.

1 BROTHER: Marvin Robert Leighton and his wife Carolyn of Oklahoma City, OK.

21 Grandchildren, 46 Great-Grandchildren and 22 Great-Great-Grandchildren.
